I can be necessary to see the dentist if the permanent teeth are slow to appear (more than 2 years). But Ideally, the child need to see the dentist around 4 years old. But the sooner the child see the dentist, the better it is for him. It allows him to be more familiar with the dental chair, the instruments and the noise.
This first consultation can be a preventive one. The dentist will:
- See if the child/mother brush properly and how the brushing can be improve,
- See if there is no cavities in the temporary teeth that can lead to further problems,
- Familiarize the child with the practice, the dental chair… Rather than coming for the first time for an emergency when the child is already anxious and in pain!

What about dental sealant?
There is some tiny grooves at the surface of the teeth that can cause decays. The dental sealant act as a varnish applied on the permanent molar to avoid decays. We need to place them as soon as the permanent molar are erupted so around 6 years old and 12 years old.
In regards to the orthodontist, your dentist will identifiy the best moment for your child to consult. The best is to wait for the first molar to erupt around 6-7 years old to be sure there is no pathology. In general an orthodontic treatment begin between 11- 13 years old.
