Menopause and mental health

Menopause is the natural transition in a woman‘s life when her body stops producing eggs and she can no longer become pregnant.

What are the menopause effects?

The effects of menopause can vary from woman to woman, but common symptoms include:

  • hot flashes
  • night sweats
  • changes in libido
  • vaginal dryness
  • fatigue
  • weight gain
  • hair loss
  • changes in skin texture.

In addition to these symptoms, which can destabilise and weaken some women, there are also hormonal changes that lead to mood swings, anxiety and even depression. The menopause is therefore a period that puts women’s mental health at particular risk.

How to deal with menopause?

According to the NHS, menopause can feel like a big change physically and mentally for many women, so it’s important to give yourself the time and space you need to work through these changes. It can be particularly difficult to find time for yourself at a time of life when you may have many professional and family responsibilities (teenage or young adult children, but also sometimes your parents). Knowing where to turn for good care is not always easy either.

Our Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health  supports women throughout their lives, providing the best care in the field of gynaecology, fertility, maternity, well-being, mental health, and menopause.

If you feel the need, book a consultation with one of our specialists to discuss the symptoms and effects of the menopause. During the consultation, your symptoms will be assessed and the practitioner will be able to advise you on possible lifestyle changes and inform you about hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and other options to consider to help you manage menopausal symptoms. If you are looking for psychological support or advice on looking after your mental health, our team also includes psychologists and therapists who will be able to support you.
