Do you feel like you are constantly on the go, trying to manage the overwhelming routine of life and work, while always taking on the pressures surrounding your busy life?
If so, you might have wanted to improve your mental health and wellbeing, and heard someone rave about the benefits of sophrology. You might know a friend, a family member or a colleague who has tried it, or perhaps you are just interested in learning about new ways to add to your practice. Whatever your reason or motivation, sophrology is a practical approach you can incorporate into your everyday life.
In this wellness age, sophrology has become very popular in several European countries, to the point that it’s even now part of the Geneva police force training!
What is Sophrology?
Sophrology is a practice aiming at simultaneously calming the mind and relaxing
the body.
It helps finding balance, and it is a path of self-discovery for developing physical
and emotional wellbeing. Sophrology finds its roots in the work of a neuro-psychiatrist in the 1960’s. Today, sophrology is widely used in continental Europe as a stress management therapy and a way to help people with stress and anxiety.
The method is based on specific combinations of exercises involving breathing,
muscular relaxation and positive visualisation.
It is a talking therapy, which means that the sophrologist will guide the different exercises with a calming voice and you will learn how to rebuild harmony between your mind and your body. Each practice is aimed at calming the nervous system.
How does a sophrology session work?
During a session, after a time of discussion around your needs, we establish a
goal together and what to aim for making you feeling better. We decide on a
programme tailored to your needs, allowing gentle but deep transformation
always at your own rhythm.
After the practice, there is another time of discussion where you can go further
and reflect on the session. You can’t “fail” and it is a space where you can
unload with no judgement. We can also record the practice, giving you the possibility to continue your practice in your own time, in between sessions.
A great benefit of sophrology is that it is accessible to everyone regardless of age, gender, language or culture. Even if you are suffering from health issues, it can be adapted to fit your physical needs. Your sophrologist will guide you in accordance to your needs and your abilities
What should I expect from a sophrology consultation?
Sophrology is a method for improving health, well-being, and personal development. When practiced regularly, it can allow you to achieve:
-
- Full body tension release
- Mastering breathing (from calming to energising)
- Nurturing a positive mindset (which doesn’t mean neglecting the “not so
positive”, it’s finding balance and relief) - Learning how to find long-lasting ways to cope better with stress and
anxiety
Here are some examples of what sophrology can help with, and the most
common reasons for consultations in my practice:
-
- Sleep
- General stress and anxiety
- Stress and anxiety in anticipation to a specific event (change of job/career,
exams, interviews, public speaking, etc) - Pre and post-natal support
Life with chronic pain or support during illness:
-
- Prepare for medical intervention
- Lack of motivation and difficulty to focus/”brain fog”
- Tiredness and burnout
Ready to relax?
Sophrology is approachable by virtually anybody. It can be practiced alone or in a group, no matter where you are located in the world, whether at home or at work.
Most sessions are held online, although we always try to accommodate you if
you prefer in person. It’s always nice to meet in person! Either way, it does not
affect the work we do together and it is as effective both ways. By doing it from
the comfort of your own home, you learn how to practice in your day to day
environment and avoid the trouble of travelling before/after your appointment.
Sessions last 50mn to 1hour, with sometimes more time for the first session, so
we can get to know each other and you are not rushed.
When practiced regularly, these simple and effective exercises will allow you to develop deep calmness and inner joy, while helping improve your mental health during times of high stress and fear. Sophrology is designed to be incorporated into your daily routine, so practice it daily if you can, that is how good habits form!
