Opticians are specialists who have a mission : to maintain, protect, and restaure our vision. It’s necessary for you to choose the right optician and to know more about this specialist, because their role is really important for your eye’s health. It is why MeditSimple wants to inform you about this professional.
How can an optician help you?
The job of an optician is to interpret the optical prescriptions written by optometrists or ophthalmologists, as well as giving advice to patients about contact lenses, spectacle frames, and styling. They can help you take frame and facial measurements, advise partially sighted patients on the use of low vision aids, and help when adjustments or repairs to spectacles are needed. They also manage the shop in which they work.
What is an optician’s background?
They are different ways to become a dispensing optician in the UK; an optician must complete a three-year course, studying dispensing optics at a training institution approved by the General Optical Council (GOC). There are three different modes of study to choose from: a two-year full-time training course followed by one year’s salaried work in a practice, a three-year day release training course combined with an employment or a three-year distance learning course combined with an employment.
What do you need to bring ?
You will need to bring the same things to each of your appointments with eye specialists:
- Your glasses or contacts (if you have any)
- You may wish to not wear your contacts for a few days prior to the visit to allow for more precise measurements; ask the doctor when you book an appointment what to do.
- A list of any health conditions, allergies, medications and supplements that you take
- Don’t forget to bring your insurance information; most policies do not cover routine eye care, but when the diagnosis announces health problems such as dry eyes or glaucoma, they may offer cover.
